001 / The Whitby Visit

Two thousand people who look like paintings.

Whitby Goth Weekend happens twice a year, and it draws thousands of people who have spent months — sometimes years — creating their look. Steampunk, Victorian mourning wear, Edwardian lace, creatures from somewhere that doesn't exist yet.

For a photographer, it's unlike anywhere else. People want to be photographed. The streets are full of extraordinary characters in extraordinary light and they're utterly comfortable in front of a lens. It's the anti-street photography — and it's remarkable.

The photographs here are a mix of candid and requested — the approach is the same as always. Look, notice, frame, wait, press.
